Writing Tip: Anyway vs. Anyways

Writing Tip: Anyway vs. Anyways

The likelihood of you hearing somebody say “anyways” during a conversation is quite high, but is it correct?  No, it is not.  There are plenty of words that are used on a frequent basis that seem to be accepted nowadays, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that their usage is correct in either print or conversation, and “anyways” is one of them.

For some, the term “anyways” probably sounds unnatural.  That’s because it is.  “Anyway” is the proper term, and it should always be used.  Here are a couple of examples:

Anyway, I have to go to class now.  I will speak to you later.

Grant couldn’t stand the smell of popcorn in the office, but Jessica cooked it anyway.

It’s important to remember that “anyway” is the correct choice in this argument.  In fact, you can go ahead and eliminate “anyways” from your vocabulary completely.  Doing so will get rid of any chance of confusion down the line and will make life much simpler.  Just because you hear “anyways” used in television and everyday conversation does not mean that you should as well.   If you stumble upon the term “anyways” in conversation or in print, tell the person so that they can correct it and avoid making the same mistake again in the future.
